What techniques do chiropractors use to treat pain and stiffness?

Chiropractors use a wide range of gentle, specific manipulation techniques to unlock stiff joints to restore proper function and mobility, which in turn settles the pain.

Chiropractors use a variety of soft tissue, massage techniques and exercise as part of the treatment. Modalities such as Low Level Laser, Shockwave Therapy, Tecar Therapy, Interferential and Ultrasound may also be used. We also use pain relief acupuncture (dry needling).

The Initial Consultation

At your first visit, the chiropractor will take a full and detailed medical history and carry out a thorough physical, orthopaedic, neurological and chiropractic examination. Other investigations might also be necessary, such as X-rays or MRI scans. The consultation takes around 45 minutes.

The purpose of the consultation is to find out what is causing your symptoms and to find out if there are any contraindications before treating you. We will then adapt our treatment methods to make sure the treatment is going to be effective, comfortable and safe for you.

The chiropractor will do whatever is possible to ease your symptoms but it may not be appropriate to treat you directly after the consultation, this will depend on the nature of your problem but, if it is appropriate, the chiropractor will treat you during the initial consultation.

The Second Appointment – Report of findings

During the report of findings your chiropractor will explain their findings from the examination, the diagnosis and the treatment plan. If X-rays were taken in the initial consultation you will be shown these and your chiropractor will explain their findings.

Once all your questions have been answered and you are happy to start, we commence the treatment. It is important that all your queries have been answered and that you have a good understanding of your problem. Our patients have found that this helps them achieve better long-term results.

Follow-up Appointments

The number of treatments required depends on the nature of the condition, how long it has been present and also, importantly, what you want out of the treatment.

If you have been suffering from a recurring problem or have certain indications that puts you at risk from developing a recurrent problem your chiropractor will take this into account when making the treatment plan to give you long-term benefits.

The pain only tells half the story. Just because the pain has eased, it does not mean that the problem is gone. A common mistake is to ignore the problem once the pain is gone – just to find the problem returning all too soon.

Once the pain has settled, further treatments will help to stabilise the vulnerable area and prevent recurrences of the problem. We always suggest a long-term exercise programme to help you stay pain free and improve your overall health. Our patients find that chiropractic treatment works best when it is not used as a painkiller, but is used to keep the pain away.
