Avoiding Pain Working From Home

This unique time we are living through has created new challenges for many of us and during the national lockdown, working from home and homeschooling have now become a part of our normal routine. Pain has also become part of the norm for many people. Chiropractic treatment can help that!

We are seeing an increased number of patients attending the clinics with pain often related to them having spent extended periods working from home.

Below we have some advice for you to incorporate into your working from home routine to help prevent any additional strain on the body. 

How To Set Up a Dedicated Workstation 

We have seen a large number of patients coming in with either new or exaggerated pain and often we find out they have been working on makeshift desk setups for long hours at a time.

As tempting as it can be to work from the comfort of your bed or sofa, where possible we encourage all patients to ensure they have a dedicated workstation set up.

We recommend using a proper desk and office chair if at all possible. However, we are aware that a lot of people are having to ‘make do’ and cannot utilise the correct office furniture right now.

Therefore, if you are in this situation and are finding at the end of the day your back is stiff or painful your chair may not have sufficient back support.

To reduce this we recommend you either use a cushion, propped up against your back, or purpose-made back support to help reduce the strain on your back throughout the day.

Make Sure You Take Regular Breaks

Many patients advise that once they get themselves set up to work for the day they are finding they do not move again often for several hours at a time. No longer needing to commute into the office and not getting up to talk to colleagues during the day is often resulting in frequent prolonged sitting in the same position.

We recommend that you get up to stretch and walk around for 1-2 minutes every half hour if possible to keep your body moving and reduce the risk of pain occurring.

Allowing yourself a couple of minutes break to move your body will help you to feel more relaxed and often result in you being more productive during the day too! 

Incorporate Additional Exercise Into Your Routine 

Working from home combined with lockdown limiting the amount we can leave the house has resulted in many of us simply not moving as much as we normally would.

Therefore, we also encourage patients to find a suitable form of exercise to do each day to keep your body moving.

Dependent on your skill level this can be as simple as a nice walk outside in the fresh air or a more advanced home workout.

Any exercise you decide to incorporate into your routine we advise you to start slowly and build it up gradually, stay hydrated, and do not overwork yourself.
