Chiropractic Treatment, Pregnancy and Infant Care - To Avoid Injuries

How to Avoid Injury Looking After Your Newborn

Chiropractic treatment is often the answer to many physical problems that develop during pregnancy.

Chiropractic treatment offers a safe, gentle, drug free alternative for the relief of discomfort during pregnancy and can play an important role in ensuring that your body and spine are functioning normally.

Physical changes to the body during pregnancy and the traumatic experience of the delivery process can have a big impact on your body.

During the 3rd trimester a hormone is released called relaxin which loosens all the ligaments around your pelvic joints (sacroiliac joints) allowing it to widen in preparation for the birth.

The slackness of the ligaments remains for several months after delivery creating ‘pelvic instability’, leaving joints vulnerable to strain.

Pregnancy and delivery also take their toll on the abdominal and pelvic muscles, and the baby's weight pulls your centre of gravity forward, often leading to postural strains.

Back pain is the most commonly seen injury during pregnancy and after delivery in chiropractic practice, but there are other injuries that occurs frequently too.

De Quervain's tenosynovitis
, aka mother's wrist

This is a repetitive injury where the synovial sheath around a tendon becomes very painful and inflamed. It occurs in new mothers particularly due to overextension or flexing too much holding your newborn in a sustained position for an extended period of time.

Fluid retention and hormonal changes during pregnancy also cause the tissues around the tendons to swell and become inflamed.

Self Help: Hold your baby in a way that doesn't overexert the muscles of your hand, wrist, and forearm. Keep your forearm, wrist, and hand in a straight line instead of bending the wrist to hold your baby's head.

Take frequent breaks from any hand-intensive activity, and allow your hand and wrist to rest in a neutral position. If possible, carry your child with both arms or use a baby carrier. And when using a push chair place your palms on top of the handles to minimize the tendency to bend your wrists.

Chiropractic Help: Activity advice to prevent the tendon becoming inflamed further. Therapeutic ultrasound which transmits a soundwave which encourages healing to the tendon. Low level Laser therapy used by sports teams which decreases inflammation and promotes healing. Use of cryotherapy (cold packs) to decrease the inflammation. Stretching techniques to the forearm muscles, use of specific massage, acupuncture to decrease forearm muscle tightness and prevent further injury.

Back Strains

The injury: Pulled or strained neck and shoulder muscles can be caused by hunching over during the feeds.

Spending hours with your neck pushed forward means the shoulder and neck muscles have to work harder to support your head, which can lead to overstretching or small tears.

This is a very common complaint because mothers spend so much time seated, leaning forward and gazing down at the baby during feeding sessions.

How to Prevent it:
While feeding your baby, be sure to look up periodically and do rolling-neck stretches. Use a footstool and a pillow or a nursing pillow to raise your baby a bit higher.

Keep your arms free, resting on the pillow, so they aren't bearing your baby's weight. If you're bottle-feeding, switch sides regularly to give your arms and shoulders a rest.

Your bra can also be a source of pain. Make sure your bra fits properly!

Pelvic Girdle Pain and Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

This is pain at the front of your pelvis where the two big joints round the back form a joint around the front where your ‘pubic bone’ is this is know as your symphysis pubis.

The two bigger joints around the back are called your ‘sacroiliac joints’ which people confuse with their hips.

Pain at the front is very common due to postpartum misalignment of the pelvis joints which causes irritation at the front over the pubic joint.

It is best to have a proper assessment from a chiropractor to stabilise these slack joints and level the pelvis to stop the pain worsening.

Prevent Back Problems

Avoid holding your baby on one hip, supporting her with just one arm and tilting your pelvis in the process.

Instead:

  • Hold the baby with both arms, close to your body.
  • When you do use the hip carry, switch sides regularly.
  • Maintaining correct posture can help prevent pelvic pain.
  • Strengthen your pelvic and core muscles!

Correct Lifting of Baby

Do not stand outside the car and try to place your child in the car seat. Kneel on the back seat as you place the baby into the car seat. Consider trading in your sporty two-door model for a four-door vehicle, which will make it easier for you to place the child in the car seat.

Keep the baby as close to your midline (your centre of gravity) as often as possible. Be aware that having outstretched arms and holding your child puts an immense amount of strain on the low back.

Use your legs. These are the most powerful muscle group in the body, people will tend to use their spine to bend forward and pick things up. Start bending your knees and get your hip joints moving and buttock area engaged instead of compensating and using your low back ‘lumbar spine’. The more you use your legs and avoid repetitive loading your back the more pain free you will be.

Pregnancy should be an enjoyable life experience, and these problems can be easily avoided by following these simple steps. As Chiropractors we are trained to recognise mechanical dysfunction of the spine, along with the muscles and joints, Chiropractic can be a great source of relief during and after the 9 months of pregnancy, so keep us in mind if you develop any pain.

Why Chiropractic?

Chiropractic treatment offers a safe, gentle, drug free alternative for the relief of discomfort during pregnancy and can play an important role in ensuring that your body and spine are functioning normally.

This can result in less pain for the mother to be and more room for the developing baby so that both mother and baby experience less physical and emotional stress.

Also, by reducing the stresses and strains on the joints and muscles, normal daily activities can be continued throughout the 9 months and many women find that labour is shorter and less painful.
