Chiropractic and Otitis Media – EaracheOtitis Media (OM) is a generic name for several conditions that can affect the middle ear, including inflammation of the middle ear, ranging from acute to chronic and with or without symptoms. Acute otitis media (AOM) is characterised by symptoms of pain and fever. Otitis media with effusion (OME) is typified by the presence of fluid in the middle ear without signs or symptoms of infection. Earache is the most common reason for visiting a paediatrician. By the age of 3, more than 70% of children will have had at least one episode of earache and about a third will have had more than 3 episodes. Medical Treatment The usual treatment for OM is a course of antibiotics. However, this does not always help the problem due to the fact that the ear infection may not be due to bacteria. Viral infections do not respond to antibiotics. This may be the reason why children develop chronic ear infections. Even though some antibiotics are quite effective, the residual fluid may remain inside the ear due to impaired drainage from the middle ear cavity. The anatomy of children’s ear tubes is also different (shorter and more horizontal) making drainage difficult. The residual fluid may become an ideal setting for the next virus or bacteria that arrives in the area! Chiropractic Treatment Chiropractic treatment for OM involves a detailed and thorough evaluation of the neck and surrounding musculature. The upper 4 cervical vertebrae are most often involved. If the nerves that arise from these areas are irritated, an abnormal tension can be produced in the small muscles of the neck resulting in pressure on the lymphatic drainage ducts. This will lead to inadequate drainage from inside the area. Treatment usually involves gentle spinal manipulation and soft tissue therapy. Children with earache usually respond well within 3 chiropractic treatments.
